‘MyAdoptionStory.ie’ promotes modern adoption as a lifeline for women in crisis pregnancies: Healy Eames

March 27th

Tomorrow Wednesday (March 28th, Buswells Hotel, 3.30pm), Minister John Paul Phelan (Fine Gael) and Professor Patricia Casey will jointly launch the website www.myadoptionstory.ie, a new resource for girls/women with crisis pregnancies, who are considering their options.

Founder of myadoptionstory.ie, Dr. Fidelma Healy Eames, says ‘Adoption is the best of all options in a difficult situation, when a mother can’t keep her baby. It has proven to be a lifeline for women in crisis pregnancies and unlike abortion, it keeps the door open to a future for both mother and child. As an adoptive parent of two young people, I know this to be true.

Minister John Paul Phelan speaking in advance of the launch said 'I am an enthusiastic supporter of adoption given the impact I have seen in families close to me. Adoption has slipped off the radar and that has to change. I am delighted to lend my support to this unique initiative'.

Professor Patricia Casey, also an adoptive parent, says it is vital to be open in adoption. This means answering the child's questions truthfully in an age-appropriate way. Most especially, they should know from the beginning that they are adopted and precious to you and to their birth mother/ parents'.

Dr. Healy Eames continues, 'Modern adoption in Ireland, following the Hague agreement guidelines, is a positive, healthy choice for a birth mother and her baby. Adoptive families go through a rigorous assessment and counseling regime to ensure readiness and suitability to adopt a child. This is as it should be. However, one could be forgiven for thinking that adoption has almost disappeared such is the focus on abortion as the only option for women in crisis pregnancies. This is deeply misleading. It is time that modern adoption with all its openness and safeguards was promoted. Girls/ women in crisis pregnancies deserve to know more about the positives of adoption today. I would urge any woman in a crisis pregnancy to consult this site before they make a decision for themselves and their baby.

myadoptionstory.ie will also lobby for improved services for women and babies, including improved adoption timelines and services in Ireland.

In addition to important links to useful resources, this new website uniquelyfeatures more than twenty powerful real-life stories of lives changed by adoption - birth mothers, adopted persons, adoptive and prospective adoptive families. I am indebted to the contributors for the openness and courage with which they responded to my call for adoption stories. The stories speak for themselves, they are life in the making.

This site is a voluntary initiative founded by Fidelma Healy Eames and supported by a group of enthusiastic volunteers.

Why my adoption website is a lifeline for Irish women in crisis pregnancies

Fidelma Healy Eames, March 25 2018

Adoption changed our family's life forever. This happened because of the selfless decision of two birth mothers who gave life to their children and chose to place them for adoption, because the time wasn't right for them in their lives. Today these children are fine young people, one a teen and one in college.
